How It Works
Towing significantly reduces EV range, typically by 30-60% depending on trailer weight, aerodynamics, and speed. A 5,000 lb trailer behind an electric truck can cut range in half. The two main culprits are added weight (which increases rolling resistance and energy needed for acceleration) and aerodynamic drag from the trailer. Reducing speed from 65 to 55 mph while towing can improve range by 10-15%. Use enclosed trailers when possible for better aerodynamics. Plan charging stops conservatively — aim to arrive at each charger with 15-20% battery remaining. The Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Tesla Cybertruck all have significant real-world towing range data available from owner communities.
