How It Works
Temperature has a significant effect on EV range. Cold weather is the biggest challenge because lithium-ion batteries are less efficient at low temperatures, and cabin heating draws significant power. At 20°F with heat on, you might see 20-35% range loss. At -10°F, range can drop by 40-50%. Hot weather also reduces range but by less (5-15%) since AC is more efficient than resistive heating. Newer EVs with heat pump systems handle cold weather much better, losing only 10-20% at freezing temperatures. Tips: pre-condition the cabin while plugged in, use seat heaters instead of cabin heat, and keep the battery state of charge higher in winter.
