How It Works
Real-world EV range differs from EPA ratings due to driving conditions. Speed has the biggest impact: at 75 mph, air resistance increases dramatically, reducing range by 10-20% compared to 65 mph. Highway driving at 80 mph can cut range by 25-30%. Climate control is the second biggest factor: heating in cold weather can reduce range by 15-25% because EVs use battery power for cabin heat (unlike gas cars which use waste engine heat). AC has a smaller impact, typically 5-10%. Other factors include tire pressure, cargo weight, elevation changes, and driving style. Aggressive acceleration uses more energy than smooth, gradual acceleration.
