How It Works

EV efficiency is measured in miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh) or watt-hours per mile (Wh/mi). The average EV gets about 3.0-4.0 mi/kWh. Smaller, more aerodynamic EVs like the Tesla Model 3 or Hyundai Ioniq 6 can exceed 4.0 mi/kWh, while larger trucks and SUVs may get 2.0-2.5 mi/kWh. MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) uses the fact that 33.705 kWh equals the energy in one gallon of gasoline. A typical EV achieves 100-130 MPGe, compared to 25-35 MPG for gas cars. Driving habits that improve efficiency: maintain steady speeds, use regenerative braking, avoid rapid acceleration, check tire pressure monthly, and reduce highway speed when possible.
