How It Works
Time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates charge different prices based on when you use power. Peak hours (typically 4-9 PM) cost the most because demand is highest. Off-peak hours (usually 11 PM to 7 AM) are cheapest. For EV owners, this creates a huge opportunity: by setting your car to charge overnight during off-peak hours, you can reduce charging costs by 50-70%. Most EVs have built-in charging schedulers that let you plug in immediately but delay charging until off-peak hours start. Some utilities offer special EV-only TOU rates that are even cheaper than standard off-peak rates, sometimes as low as $0.04-0.06 per kWh.
