How It Works

EV charging speed depends on the charger level and your vehicle's onboard charger capacity. Level 1 (standard 120V outlet) provides about 1.4 kW and adds 3-5 miles of range per hour — fine for plug-in hybrids but slow for full EVs. Level 2 (240V) provides 7-19 kW and adds 25-60 miles per hour — the sweet spot for home charging. DC Fast Chargers provide 50-350 kW, but charging slows significantly above 80% state of charge to protect battery health. This is why most fast charging recommendations suggest charging to 80%, not 100%. Charging efficiency is typically 85-95%, meaning some energy is lost as heat during the charging process.
